I decided to do two of my favourite songs as vinyl covers, one as a pocket sleeve and the other as a folding sleeve. The two songs I chose are entirely different and I wanted to show this in the cover.
The first song I chose was Dream Boy by Waterparks. The song is very pop in style and i wanted to reflect this in the cover so I used brightly coloured oil pastels and i doodled around the outside to show the playful nature of this song. I lyric i based my cover on was ” living in your subconscious”, I immediately began thinking about the head the mind. I thought about what would be behind the mind of this song and what would live in the subconscious of this song if it were a person. What happened was an explosion of colour.
For the record label i wanted it to reflect the cover so I decided to colour it in multicoloured just like the explosion fro the face on the cover.
For the back cover, again, I wanted to tie it in with the front. I used oil pastel to scrawl the artists name on the cover near the top as I wanted it to look childish and playful. I used the same principle when it came to the artists photo and removed their faces and added colour.
The second song I chose was ‘Softcore’ by The Neighbourhood. The bands style and branding is very monochrome and subtle, but in contrast to me this song sounds almost colourful, it sounds like a glitch like on a tv or computer and i wanted to reflect this in my cover art. For the cover i followed the band’s style and made it monochrome by ripping up newspaper and magazine articles and collaging them together. I also pasted the name of the song using cut up newspaper letters onto the bottom of the cover. A lyric i focused on was “my muse’, so I began to think about art and sculpture, settling on renaissance sculpture pieces like “David” for example. David extends form the top right corner and a bright pink tear drips down.
For the record label i just used the same principle using the David sculpture but this time with a black drip. On the inside I wanted to reflect the song. I weaved magazine clippings together and photocopied it and pasted it together on the inside. I wanted the inside to look like a glitch almost reflecting the way I see the song.
On the back I completed the monochrome style and added the band members in and scribbled and manipulated their faces.
