Paula Scher American graphic designer and painter. She mainly works commercially for different companies developing branding and identities for example Microsoft, designing the Windows 8 logo. She and other designers founded a company called Pentagram, a unique studio where the owners of the business are the creators of the work as well. Within Scher’s work she uses typography a lot. Due to her work being made for brands and identities, her work is very communicative, but it designed in such a way the type interacts with the images to form story. She uses bold and clear typography in her work that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Scher’s work is heavily influenced by pop art. Some of her posters for The Public Theatre seem to be influenced by Russian propaganda posters. Her work is crisp clear and fine-tuned, whilst also maintain a fun and hyperactive atmosphere to them characterised by the bold and bright colours she chooses for different posters. Like the work above, she often uses lines to exaggerate different shapes and objects to draw attention to the most important information in her work. Her work is geometric and includes a lot of straight lines instead of curves and squiggles. This is because her work is very communicative and using straight lines are old and can get directly to the point clearly.
She has created a series of maps using typography. She has created a map of USA, only by using the names and facts from each state. Each state is a bright colour segregated by a bold white dotted line that clearly divides the work. She has also created another painting like this for the city of London.
