“Incendio” – Sculpture Proposal

When asked to create a sculpture I knew I wanted to include natural light somehow and use the elements of nature. I chose the name Incendio as in Spanih it means wildfire and the purpose of the sculpture is to dissipate light across the courtyard and create shapes and a pattern that spread like wildfire. I wanted to in cooperate science aspects with art and nature. I thought about different types of energy that exists and thought a lot about kinetic energy along with light energy. This produced a sculpture that resembles a cupcake case that could spread light and spin around. Installed with solar panels it turns light energy into electrical energy.

My sculpture will be stainless steel powder painted white, although I am conscious of the maintenance that comes along with a white sculpture. It would be a matte finish as I would be worried in case the light reflected off the piece and ruined or corrupted the intricate pattern around the edges. The sculpture will act in the same way as a sundial. It will be most effective at midday as the sun strikes directly above the sculpture and the lights escapes out of the cuttings within the steel work and create a beautiful pattern that scatters and dances across the floor. The sculpture works at any time of day depending on where the sun is the pattern will change perspective. Also, it is fit with a solar panel and lights on the inside so at night it illuminates and the sculpture can be observed at night as well. It will be fit on a pole and podium and viewers will be able to spin the sculpture almost like a merry-go-round reflecting the playpark that resides beside the sculpture. This will make the pattern dance and create a festival of light to who ever observes it. It will be 3m x 2.5m as I want it to be tall enough that it will create a pattern that stretches across most of the courtyard but people are still able to spin it around.  Because of the use of the sun as a factor in my sculpture I need to make sure it won’t be blocked by a building in close proximity.
