BRUNO CATALANO- Artist Research

The French sculptor was born in Morocco to a Sicilian family. His sculptures consist of men and woman travellers standing whilst having parts of their torso missing. Each sculpture looks incomplete as depicting wanderers who are travelling to find themselves. The artist explores the themes of belonging and exploration, he references how his since of belonging is distorted. The sculptures are melancholy and have an existential theme to them, as the travellers go from place to place trying to find themselves. The grand statures are formed from bronze having the middle cut out of them. THE figures are a reference to classicism and have a very stylised human form. Due to the torso being missing the wanderers blend into the background of their location, and almost become their location. His could be because of the wanderers losing themselves in their new country of origin or they are finally rebuilding themselves after finding themselves. Are they trying to fill the hole or complete themselves? The sculptures and location fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, but the fragments are fragile and are held delicately together as they seemingly defy gravity.
