ASYA KOZINA AND DMITRY KOZIN- Artist Research

Together Asya Kozina and Dmitry Kozin form a duet of artists that create and style contemporary art instalments that have traditional and historical elements that flow through it. One of their most acclaimed installations are the ‘Baroque Paper wigs’. The wigs are made entirely out of white paper to mimic the powder white wigs from the 17th century. The Russian pairing juxtapose es the old style of wig with a modern luxury. Starting as simple graceful wigs they quickly progressed into grand detailed wigs, each with its own motif and story to tell. The wigs are intricately fold and cut to display different scenes of importance for example, building and ships.

Kozina describes the wigs as “Art for art’s sake… no practical point.’ The novelty of the wigs from the 27th century inspires the partners to create the most obnoxious looking wigs but doing it in such a way it looks elegant and still beautiful. The use of white paper only helps to add a sense of elegancy and hides the detailed aspects to prompt the viewer to take a closer look at the wig. In the 17th century the rich and important only wore wigs as they were expensive and made from special materials suggesting higher class but the artists challenge this by creating the wigs out of paper which is accessible and cheap.
