AAD012 Career Research

Out of all the fashion careers there are, I decided to research an Embroiderer for this task because it is one that I am most intrigued with and I am interested in possibly pursuing this career choice.

Embroiderers combine traditional sewing skills with current software programs to design and construct embellishments on an item. They are usually employed by large-scale clothing labels, retailers or design companies, or they may work independently as freelance artists. I love how embroiderers can can create intricate detail and designs on products such as clothing, accessories and home décor items by using machinery to sew many parallel rows of straight stitching. There are a wide range of skills embroiderers gain such as hand sewing, computer design, attention to detail, the ability to work well with you hands and a strong sense of creativity and flair. They also learn the ability to work alone, part of a team and be patient and remain calm under pressure. It is very important for embroiderers to have customer service skills when dealing with the public and be able to explain your ideas and creations to their customers. If embroiderers are self employed, it is vital to have business skills too, so they can market their goods and services and deal with finances and develop their business. For me, this career is exciting and unpredictable and i love how you could never get bored as each embroidery design request is different and always changing for each client.

Jenny King

I looked at Jenny King who is a professional embroiderer and runs her own Irish embroidery business. She is one of the most experienced and cutting-edge embroidery and mixed-media textile designers working in the UK fashion industry today. Her studio is placed in Brighton and she uses an old, Irish highly specialised embroidery machine that stopped being produced in the 1950’s to produce her creations and embroidery designs. She preserves a technique in embroidery that otherwise would become a dying art by renovating old machines. There has been a high demand for Jenny King’s embroidery from  high profile designers such as Stella McCartney, Olivia Von Halle and Rixo London. She works with her clients to help them develop their ideas and then produces the embroidery for fashion shows. There are usually up to seven freelance embroiderers working for King and spring/summer and autumn/winter is usually the busiest time for production when fashion runway shows occur. Personally, I love her embroidery, as it beautifully capturers the intricate details of flowers and plants and she uses eye-catching colour schemes for each garment she produces.
