AAD011 Sustainability Postcard Research

Upon my research for this task, I discovered that the Fast Fashion Industry is one of the largest contributors to damaging the environment. There is more pressure than ever before due to climate change for clothing brands to therefore use manufacturing processes that are sustainable and eco-friendly. The image I have chosen for a postcard has been taken from Stella McCartney’s 2017 Womenswear sustainability campaign. Stella McCartney is a fashion designer who has been an advocate for ethical and environmentally friendly clothing and uses vegetarian leather, forest friendly and recycled fabrics. This image features three of her models wearing fashionwear posing in front of a landfill of old or disposed clothing in Scotland. Personally, this image made me feel uncomfortable and guilty as it reminded me just how much humans have gotten disconnected to our environment and selfish about other life and the earth. I feel like this is a striking, emotional and bold image which demonstrates not only the dire effect humans waste and throw away systems are having but also promotes the solution to have more sustainable fashion brands such as Stella McCartney who is leading by an amazing example. I love how this image gets the viewer to think more about what type of person they want to be, what their habits as a consumer are and how they should be more considerate of the negative impacts on the environment. The contrast of the bleak environment and the models who have youthful, positivity and hope for a better future works extremely well in sending a message to the viewer.
