My First Major Choice – Textile Art, Design and Fashion
Out of all the choices, I am most interested in doing the area of Textile Art, Design and Fashion for semester 2. I really enjoyed the tasks we were given in AAD010 such as the Denim Challenge and sketching the models on the runway. I work best when I can be flexible with my designs and when I have room to work from whatever materials, fabrics or patterns I feel will look best. I would love to have the opportunity to do fashion illustration and develop innovative concepts so that I will be prepared for a career in a creative, flexible industry that I will benefit from, progress and learn new skills from. I have always had a burning passion to experiment with fabrics and come up with my own creations in clothing, jewellery and footwear that I feel fully shows my unique taste in style. By continuing with this choice, I would like to have more experience in fashion and design through practical, creative and technical challenges. I would love to gain more sewing and knitting experience so that I am able to handmake my own pieces of clothing that I have designed for a module. I have always been intrigued in the retail/marketing side of fashion and textile art and I would love to learn more about the fashion industry. I would love one day to hopefully set up my own business in the fashion industry that features popular staples of clothing, jewellery or footwear that I feel is majorly missing on the market or that does not feature today in many clothing brands. I think this choice in the next semester will clarify and help me decide what area in fashion I most enjoy in more detail than beforehand. One of the things I have always dreamed of doing is working with leading brands on exciting projects. I am hugely inspired by many local fashion designers who have created their own brands and clothing from scratch and who have had success through hard work and determination such as Patricia Grogan who has worked with celebrities such as Rihanna and I admire many Irish fashion designers and influencers such as Hope McCauley who has had massive success knitting her own designer multicoloured cardigans.
My Second Minor Choice – Graphic Design and Illustration
My second choice for Semester 2 that I have chosen is Graphic Design and Illustration. At school I studied Media Studies and I loved looking at posters, unique fonts and logos from movies and television series and the reasons why each aspect was used to have an intended meaning. I feel that this course choice will enable me to strengthen my ability to think creatively and build more confidence in being able to approach any design brief that I am given in the future. I love the challenge of having to come up with a concept which meets a specific product or topic but at the same time having freedom to choose my own design. I am passionate about Graphic Design because I am usually confident about how things can look their best whether it is via social media, technology or on the packaging of products. As a child, I have also always had a talent for drawing characters which are unique to specific storylines within books and I enjoy the process of illustration. I would really love to learn more skills in certain areas such as colour theory, typography, logo design, branding layout and editorial design and discover how to use a variety of tools within different apps that will help me bring my graphic designs to life. I am interested in learning more about how to market my work to potential clients through my future portfolios and presentations. I have always had a passion for graphic design packaging, particularly for PR marketing and how to produce designs that are different and eye catching to consumers. The skills that I will learn for this choice will hopefully help me further understand how to successfully create unique and attractive packaging for companies who want to sell a product. One of the areas that I most enjoy in graphic design is 3D Media which I have gotten a taste of by using an iPad software to create my own designs. I would love to become a lot more fluid in using software such as InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop and learn how to use tools that I have never used before. I also hope to build my problem-solving skills and be better able to work under a specific time frame that challenges me so that I am ready for the realities of the working world.
