Ian Berry

Ian Berry is a textile artist that uses many layers and shades of denim to create sad urban scenes that depict loneliness or less glamorous side of city living. The process takes months and it takes a long time to find the right piece of denim to make his artwork appear three dimensional and Berry often relies on the lighting. His artwork is inspired by his living conditions as a child, witnessing the closing of buildings within communities and the attitudes of viewing people only by what material possessions they had. Berry wants to show that these possessions do not necessarily make people happy. He often uses second hand or old denim clothing that he has been sent from all over the world for his artwork. I really love how the final outcome of his work is so three dimensional that it doesn’t appear to be denim unless I look up close.

Ashish Gupta

Ashish Gupta is an Indian fashion designer who works with a variety of materials such as denim, sequins and uses the process of hand embroidery. From a young age, Gupta was obsessed with the designer Bob Mackie’s old Hollywood costumes of the 1980’s. He is also inspired by neon lighting and likes to incorporate colourful, neon patterns and splashes of colour within his clothing creations. For London Fashion Week, he depends on the dark background and white lighting for his designs to really come to life and show off the vibrant colours within his designs. He has created outfits for a range of celebrities such as Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Lily Allen. He has been described as the ‘King of Glitter’ within the fashion industry. Gupta’s designs caught my eye when I first came across them, especially how vibrant and unique the clothing is. I love the oversized tied denim look he creates and I admire how he does not follow the usual trends each year.
