Fine Art Final Piece

For my final piece, I ended up doing a lot of research into artists who were also fascinated by the concept of space time… I discovered that cubism was actually created based on theoretical physics and the fourth dimension. I also discovered Salvador Dalí’s Corpus Hypercubus, a painting depicting Jesus being crucified on a Tesseract (a 4D object) and I was speechless! I couldn’t believe I had never discovered this piece of art before.

I used this research to inform my work, and began gathering my own personal research. I captured photos of faces under stretchy material (thank you Laura for your help) and had my friends and I photo copy our faces.

I created a few practice drawings in my sketchbook based on my own research.

After this, I was confident in my drawing and began to play about with the research I had gathered, creating this reference photo:

I began drawing this onto fabric using chalk pastels as it was my favourite medium to use.

Off to a good start 🙂

Finally done!

In order to create a more sculptural aspect I got face masks and had them push through, creating a 3d effect on the 2d drawing.

And this is the final outcome! I am happy with this piece and how it turns out and I believe it captures the human boundary of space and time perfectly.

Charles Tamkó Sirató published his Manifeste Dimensioniste, which described how the Dimensionist tendency has led to:

  1. Literature leaving the line and entering the plane.
  2. Painting leaving the plane and entering space.
  3. Sculpture stepping out of closed, immobile forms.
  4. The artistic conquest of four-dimensional space, which to date has been completely art-free.

I believe my piece captures the second point perfectly 🙂

Sculpture workshop

I had many ideas for this workshop task focusing on scale of sculptures. I struggled with condensing my ideas down and focusing too much on the end result. I created a few sketches of my ideas and began to get to work.

I liked the idea of the small clock in a compact mirror, so I bought a small clock and a compact mirror 🙂 Whilst creating the stickman, I realised my scale might have been a bit too small, so I improvised and ended up making the sculpture a  little bigger. In the end, I created this little piece (with working clock hands!)

I have a lot of ideas about what this piece represents to me, however I’m happy enough leaving interpretation to the audience.

I had a little time left, so I also created this little guy trapped in a dream (I believe that when we dream we are in the fourth dimension or something similar.. but we wont get into it right now..)

I think he looks peaceful 🙂

Printing workshop

With Yasmine we tried 2 different types of print making. I carved my drawing into a plastic sheet and we put it through the printing press.

I enjoyed the printing as it gave me a chance to explore a more illustrative side and the tedious process was made worthwhile after seeing the end result of the print. In hindsight I would have chosen a less pigmented purple tissue paper in order to let my drawing fully come through.

Fine Art Workshop

During our 2 week workshop in Fine Art, we were tasked to choose a word from the options; care, boundary, liminal or journey.

I decided that for my theme I would choose boundary, I wanted to explore human physical and metaphysical boundaries with regards to time and dimensions.

We were tasked with creating a drawing that was larger than ourselves, so I basically put all my thoughts about the task from my brain into this work (I also realised that I was doing it wrong half way through, however it was too late). Had I been given the chance to retry this task, I would have used my own photographic references.

I think that although I didn’t have the right response to the task, this piece does evoke some thought to the viewer, and was a good foundation for me to base my work on.
