Jewellery Workshop

In this workshop we created a mould out of wet clay by pressing found objects into a thick slab. We then poured plaster into the mould and let it dry.

Final product of plaster cast:

In the afternoon, we used similar steps with wet sand and found objects, making an imprint in the compacted sand, and pouring a liquid metal on top to produce a silver broach like product.

Gao Hang

Gao Hang was born in China and spent eight years in Beijing studying traditional oil painting. While his earliest training focused primarily on traditional painting methods and mediums, Hang developed a much more unique style of painting after moving to America in 2015. After having experienced a whole new world of contemporary artists and long-term experimentation with paint application, Hang constructed a style of working in a way that is distinctive to him. Hangs work is reminiscent of colour field painting, he uses geometric abstractions and airbrush painting to create unique expressions by enhancing or abstracting certain features of his paintings. Through use of airbrushing, Hang is able to create an affect of movement by carefully and purposefully blocking colours and blurring the paint, evoking a feeling of being in the present, making his art an experience to even look at. Hang likes to make a comment on modern society through his works, using everything from politics to meme culture to inform his work. He has stated that while painting, he will listen to stand up comedy saying, “I enjoy stand up comedy that challenges general beliefs and political correctness, yet at its core, is negotiating the observations, language and laughter of a given performance. Then you realise it’s no paradox, but a good conversation between the performer and the audience.”. Interestingly enough, this quote could also be said for his own art works, as he is often critiquing the modern mass-consumerist world and human behaviour with an almost ironic observation of our fairly modern human need for instant gratification through posting our lives on social media. In his most recent exhibition, Hang highlights social issues such as our new ‘modern’ survival instinct of creating a space for ourselves online to post to ensure we have some sort of permanent ‘mark’ on the world.

Cecily Brown

Cecily Brown was born and raised in England, earning a BTech diploma in Art and Design in Epsom School of art and took print making lessons in Morley College London before moving to New York City in 1994. As a result of her background in art education, Brown was heavily influenced by traditional master painters across a wide variety of genres, evident through her compositional structure, brushwork and historical motifs used to inform her work. Brown aims to ‘play with the relationship between the eye and the brain’ through her works, as she uses colour pallets ranging from bright hues to deep blacks and almost combines figuration and abstraction to create paintings full of movement and life. Initially, brown uses drawing as a foundation to guide her work, influenced by the traditional painters that she had previously studied. Brown’s work can only be described as abstract expressionism as she has stated that she starts her paintings without having an exact idea of what shape her final outcome will take, however through her use of motion, expressive mark making and many mixtures of colour, Brown likes to let paintings develop and change while she works, as agreeably she believes It makes her art more interesting.
