Two area specialist essay

A dream of mine would be to open my own tiny home décor store, filled with items of my own creation. A more realistic career path would be becoming an Art teacher in a secondary school. I can go down either of these career pathways with both Photography with Video and Fine Art Printmaking degrees.

Out of the two areas to specialise in, I am choosing to major in Photography with Video. In this workshop I discovered a new love of photography in the world around me. In the past I had a love for portrait photography (photography  could becoming a freelance photographer. Freelance photography could pursue me into commissions for customers, for example help building investors or lead into photojournalism. Photojournalism should be as objective and truthful as possible, capturing candid moments as they happen is more important getting picture-perfect shots. Generally, photojournalists attend planned events with the hope of capturing unplanned, unscripted moments. Their work is routinely published in magazines and newspapers. I would still have the potential to focus on portrait photography in the greater future, with the chance of developing into editorial, fashion, or sports photography. Generally, for editorial photographer they will want to get shots that work for a variety of layouts. When working in editorial photography, chances are likely to work closely with writers and art directors. This could lead me into a pathway of advertising or becoming an art director. Fashion photography showcases every type of fashion clothing to make them more desirable to consumers. It is commonly published in magazines and online. Fashion photographers take a lot of full body shots and work in an array of locations, from fashion shows to studios with full lighting setups to city streets and open fields. They utilize many of the same skills as portrait photographers and must practice good teamwork and communication when working with shoot stylists, creative directors, and models. Sports photographers must aim and have good concentration to keep up with the athletes, coaches, and even fans at the perfect moment. Sports photography is also used for advertising purposes both to build a brand and as well as to promote a sport in a way that cannot be accomplished by editorial means. Full time photographers could earn anything from £18,000 – £50,000, with top end fashion and celebrity photographers making significantly more.

The second of the two areas I am deciding to specialise in is to minor in is Fine Art Printmaking. Within my future of Print making, I can create all sorts of ink painting to further sell my own creations or get personal commissions with freelance customer work. My future printmaking could be furthermore turned into calendars, notebooks, phone cases for example, or fabric prints in other textile products, like wallpaper or fashion pieces. Printmakers can also get involved with advertising through creating brochures, posters, display signs and other promotional materials by advertising, marketing and events management companies. With around 10,000 companies spread across the UK, within the printing sector, there is a huge opportunity for employment in a wide range of exciting and interesting industries, such as magazines, newspapers, labelling, packaging and many more. After a few years of experience in the print industry, there is a promotional incline of finding yourself suitable for a role as a print production planner, who is responsible for organising and monitoring the flow of printed materials. This person will oversee a team of staff, ensuring the quality of the product is up to standard, and making sure that deadlines are met. Depending on other part-time job, printmakers may be able to follow a path in arts administration, community arts or museum curating. Printmakers may additionally specialise in a technique and become a trainer or lecturer in art and design courses. Printmakers usually work on a freelance and part-time basis. At the start of the career, you will earn between £16,000 and £19,000 per year, if they are working constantly. Salaries can become much higher up to £65 an hour with experience and a good reputation.

In conclusion I have picked these two areas to specialise in because I need to think about a degree that will keep me happy and a career that I will love in the long run. I will more than likely decide on Photography with Video for degree as the possibilities that choice can lead into is more desirable for my art passion and branching out into other advances in digital or film media.
