My Adaption of Battle Ships: ‘Swim ashore!’
The basic rules of Battle Ships stays the same. However, the design has changed and there are some additional rules. Instead of ships in a battle on the ocean trying to sink their opposition, the new skins will be swimmers in the sea trying to get to a beach without getting attacked by a hungry shark. As the original battle ships had ships of different sizes and lengths; my swimmers also have a variety of size, as well as skins. Their will be surfers, swimmers, people side by side on floaties, people on jet skis and possibly more. These swimmers are placed at the bottom of both players board, furthest away from the beach, each turn a player moves up only one of their swimmers towards the beach at the top of the boards. The hungry shark will be used to attack the other players swimmers before they reach the beach. Just like in the original game when you want to sink your opponents ship you call out a coordinate on the grid and see if the shot hits, a player will do the same with this version but instead of asking is there a ship on that coordinate you would ask if you have a swimmer on that spot. If a player does not have a swimmer on that coordinate then the shark swims past that part in the ocean and a white dot is placed. If a player does have a swimmer on that coordinate the shark will eat that swimmer and a red dot is placed. If a player gets a swimmer to their beach that swimmer is safe and that player is one swimmer close to winning. Once a player gets all their swimmers ashore they win. There is an additional twist this version and the each player will have one fish icon that they can put on their side of the board on any coordinate in the sea; this fish does not move once placed on the board. If a shark swims onto this fish the opponents misses a turn.
Design Brainstorm
With my final design for the finished board game and finalised skins then will be completed with details and proper coloured. The bright and fun aesthetics will courage the players to have fun no matter what age they are. Below shows photographs of the finished board and photos of game play, as I couldn’t get a video uploaded of players playing Battle Ships: Swim ashore!!
The photo to left shows the completed board with any swimmers on the board and the middle photo of the board shows the board players beginning the game with swimmers in the ocean.
This right photo shows a close up of a players board with their own swimmers and fish beside the board about to place them on the board.
For easy access my players used black and white pins to show the attacking coordinates that each player uses.
Black pin = your own attack on your oppositions swimmers
White pin= your oppositions attack on your swimmers
Below shows your attacking board of your attacking shark on your oppositions swimmers before (left photo) and during the game (right photo0.
Below shows critical points in game play. The left photo is a photo mid game where the opposition shark has eaten two of the swimmers and made attacks on other places in the ocean/ on the board. The middle photo shows one players fish being eaten by their oppositions shark, now there opposition misses a turn and the fish can’t be used again. The right photo is the first swimmer to make it to the beach without being eaten by a shark.
