Colour exercises

This week the topic we discussed was colour, this involved what colours complement each other, how colour affects user useability in being able to read the text and how to make certain things stand out. We also covered types colour blindness and how this effect our websites when designing them with colours.

Our first exercise involved picking our favourite colour and figured out what colours complement it and many more as shown below using adobe colour which is a colour wheel that automatic picks out the best colour themes of the chosen colour. After this we explored the effects of colour blindness on websites, we were asked to use a website we liked and using Toptal we found out how these sites look for a colour-blind person. For this I choose the Rowntree website which to an average person its very eye catching using the strong greens and purples, however it was interesting to see the dramatic change this has to a colour-blind person, as these bright colours turn very unappealing dark yellows and browns, and this can be very bad marketing for a food/sweet company as the sweets themselves don’t look very appetising for a colour-blind person. Hence it is clear that this site didn’t take colour blindness into consideration when designing the website. Other sites I had seen other people chose didn’t have such dramatic changes as those other sites used a lot of whites and blacks which ended up being fairly safe colours to use when considering colour blindness.

For our final exercise this week we and to choose a colour main colour and then find a complementary secondary colour and make a simple layout for a phone using just these colours and planes. For this I chose an emerald-green and purple as these are my own first colours which in the end did complement one another. I then choose an image to use and luckily, I taken a photograph myself of a little bug that incorporated the colours I had chosen for the layout hence this exercise worked out ok, however I had to keep in mind that not every image I use in future projects may not have the luxury of complementing the colours I use for the layout.
