For this task, we had to create weaving samples using mixed media based off our previous colour palette. To begin, I created 3 small samples using coloured card to try and get the hang of the technique, as I don’t have a lot of experience with it. I found it easier than I thought, although the last strand of paper was quite hard to manipulate over and under the paper.
Following this, I introduced magazine pages with patterns and font and created a similar design but at more of an angle. I used these pages as I felt they linked back to my mood board of commercial and modern imagery. I found this harder to create as all the edges were loose so to maintain the structure I placed the weave onto a plain piece of paper.
Using yellow and blue wool, I created a woven piece with cardboard. This was my first time using this technique and I found it very successful. To improve, I would have smaller spaces between the initial yellow vertical wool so there is more of it visible through the blue. When taking it off of the cardboard, the loops were difficult to stretch out as I had to tie the new wool onto an end yellow piece, so it was difficult to move the blue wool up and down.
After creating my first woven sample using the cardboard as the base, I wanted to explore it further. For the first one, I used embroidery thread and picked the brightest colours from my palette. As the thread was much thinner, I decided to make the cardboard rectangle smaller. This was extremely time consuming and fiddly due to the small spaces, but I am very pleased with the outcome. For my last one, I braided three threads together and made 7 long pieces which I then wove through the thread on the cardboard. I feel this is successful as it was a good way to include a lot of colour in a quicker method.
