Graphic Design & Illustration: VINYL RECORD TASK Experimentation

For this task, we had to recreate one of our favourite songs in the style of a record cover from the punk era in the 1970s. I was intrigued by this task as we were only allowed to use found materials. The first thing we had to do, was to create experimental pieces which could then be used in our final cover design. I chose ‘Breakeven’ by The Script as it’s one of my favourites and I felt that the lyrics would be effective to recreate on the cover visually. I started by reading the lyrics and listening to the song while coming up with ideas.

I decided to restrict my colour palette to black and white and red as this was a technique used in DIY covers. I began using wallpaper and magazines to create collage and then work on top of them with pen and paint. After this, there was certain lyrics that got stuck in my head, ‘I’m still alive but I’m barely breathing’ and I thought this could be effective is I was able to portray it visually. So, I printed off images I found on the internet and distorted them with pen, paint, and collage. My main form of lettering was using stencils and then sponging paint around it as I felt it was the best form to relate to the era. I did something similar with the images of a heart, I printed off images as they were difficult to find in magazines etc. and stencilled over them as well as adding details with pens and other materials I had around me. Once I created most of my experimentals, I decided to create a quick photoshop image of the three members of the band, keeping to my three colours, and then I worked onto them with paint and collage. I feel the outcome of the task was successful, as I have a wide range of techniques and compositions that I can consider and mix when creating my final record cover design.
