Graphic Design & Illustration: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE Square Sketches

For our first task in this graphics workshop, we had to create 26 boxes that each represented a word. This intrigued me as at first, I thought it would be like typography, but after being shown examples I realised it would be a lot harder as we had to try and only use shapes like circles, squares and triangles. For some of the words, ideas came to mind straight away, however some were a lot more difficult and took more time. To start with I create 3 quick sketches for each word to see what compositions I could come up with. I then looked at how I would block out the colour in each and see which would become my final design for the word.

Following this, there was a few words that I felt I needed to explore further as I felt I wouldn’t be able to narrow it down just from the sketches alone, so I creates larger and more accurate squares to help me decide.

I am pleased with the outcome of my 26 squares as I feel that each one represents their word accordingly. I feel that my choice of colour palette is effective as the small pops of colour are effective in helping define the different shapes within the designs.
