IxD: 01. Prime Video Research

Before choosing the streaming service for this project, I researched what were the characteristics that different ones had that made them user friendly and also what didn’t.

I’ve chosen to focus on film/TV streaming services as it would be the area I would be more aware of and use more regularly. As part of my research, I looked into the top 5 streaming services available. The top 2 in the UK are Netflix and Prime Video so I carried out a comparison between the two. I found that even though Amazon may have more content, it doesn’t have nearly as many positive reviews about the films as Netflix.

I decided to pick Prime Video as out of the streaming services I use, it would be my least favourite and I feel it would be one I would be able to come up with different ideas to change/improve it. To familiarise myself with application, I researched into Prime Video’s history and some of the devices it is available on.

Prime Video is available across a wide range of platforms, so I decided to look at some of them and see what the similarities and differences were but also what works well and what doesn’t. This will help me to get a feel of how the application functions. One thing I did notice was that apps on different devices don’t correlate with each other and almost work as individuals. I wanted to compare the user interfaces to see on what device is it the most successful.

After looking into each platform, I have become more aware of how the streaming service works. I came up with some pros and cons ton try and help me narrow down the area/aspect that I might change.

To try and see if any other brands have successfully combined both free and paid content I looked into Apple TV. I compared the two to see if Apple did anything that would also help improve Prime Video. I found that Prime Video was actually a better option than Apple TV as Amazon put some information as to what’s free or not, whereas Apple TV doesn’t. Also, Prime Video is available on almost all devices, but Apple TV is only on Apple products and Smart TVs.

As the last part of my research, I looked into Amazon’s music streaming service. One is offered as part of Prime and the other a stand alone subscription, Amazon Music Unlimited. I carried out a comparison between the two and found both had pros and cons. Similar to Prime Video, the Prime Music sometimes shows music that isn’t always and has a limited library. The concept of introducing an ‘Unlimited’ service could be something I could introduce into Prime Video to help with the navigation and store front issues I found in my earlier research.
