Samsung Smart TV Logo (2011)
There are many ways of communicating in all areas of life, but the general definition is the exchange of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium. It can be provided either verbally, non-verbally or visually. In terms of logos, it is vital to communicate effectively what brand, company, or service it is representing. With one of my pathways being Interaction Design, I chose the logo for the Samsung Smart TV. The first smart TV came out in 2007, with Samsung introducing their own the following year. For 13 consecutive years, Samsung has been the number one TV manufacturer in the world. This logo was first used in 2011 for the Smart Hub home screen, which would be the main user interface on the TV that contains all the apps. Samsung consider the Smart Hub a ‘gateway into a new world of advanced features that will change the way you watch TV’. The main way this logo communicates to the viewer is how it is used; it is on the digital interface and is also the home button on the remote. This effectively communicates how the user would interact with the TV and creates a place that they can return to. The colour scheme links back to the brand of Samsung Galaxy, as the main app store on the TV would be the Galaxy Store, which utilises the same colours. This as a result effectively communicates that the Smart TV is its own product, separate to other Samsung products. Also, this communicates the wealth of appliances within the product, as the different colour block reflects the number of different apps. The geometric nature of the design communicates where you would find the product, as the combination of the shapes and ‘M’, make it seem as if it’s a table, which is the piece of furniture most people would place their TV. Lastly, the modern and simple font was also vital in communicating to the viewer, when the product first was released, how revolutionary it was, as it is a change from the usual Samsung font and colouring.
My Logo:
For my own logo, I decided to create one for a tutoring company, as I felt it had aspects that I could use to create a logo which communicates what the company is effectively. I named it ‘One to One Tutoring’ as that is the main aspects of tutoring that people look for. So, I felt the best way to communicate this was to use two speech bubbles as if they were coming from two people. I added the text into the gaps of the speech bubbles, which I feel creates a good composition. I didn’t fill the font as I felt it worked well with the outline of the bubbles. I chose red and blue as the main colours as after researching, I found these were the two colours that best suited learning. I feel my logo does communicate the company I created quite well as the main thing I wanted to imply was the one-to-one conversations, and I feel the speech bubbles do this.
