After carrying out my research and creating quick studies of my ideas, I chose the sketches which I wanted to develop further and see if they would work with or without colour. By doing this, I was able to see what compositions were the most successful and portrayed the household object I picked. In some of the designs, I found when I added colour, they became quite busy and had multiple colours within it, which I think makes it a less effective icon. However, in other icons, I found that the colour was what made it effective, as if it was in black and white, it wasn’t as clear what it was showing.
After receiving feedback, I picked my top two ideas and transferred them onto 16×16 grid. I experimented with the spacing as well as whether to leave certain areas as outlines or fill them in. I found the flatter icon more easier to work with within the grid but I also like how the other icons has some depth to it.
I decided that the most effective icon was the first design above as I felt it appears more sharp and clear, especially when working on the grid. Using photoshop, I creating 4 different icons, exploring different spacing and thickness of the outlines, as well as the amount of heat waves that was needed.
Using photoshop, I picked the second icon above as my main icon and explored how it would look with colour and also curving some of the edges so that it could resemble bread.
