Chaos & Order Zine Final
Overall, I am quite happy with the outcome of this project. I feel each spread links back to my theme of ‘Chaos & Order’. I chose the Yin-Yang symbol for my cover as I feel it represents the main message I wanted to portray within my zine. I decided to only include the black areas and not the outline of the other half as it is a widely recognised symbol and it created a simple but effective composition. For my first two single spreads, I felt a combination of text and symbol would prevent it from becoming overwhelming. The symbol is that of the chaos theory, which was a key focus in my research, leading into my zine design. I feel the next two double spreads are the most successful in my zine. My original idea was to have the text over the butterfly images, but after feedback, having the two on opposite sides is much more effective. For the language double spread, I included the words ‘chaos’ and ‘order’ in multiple languages with the idea that it appears chaotic to people who don’t the languages, but if you were fluent, it would make perfect sense. To take a break from the text for the next double spread I only used an image. Using photoshop, I combined an image of a butterfly with an aerial image of a storm. I placed this in the middle of my zine with the thought in mind that it could be like the eye of the storm in the layout of the zine. The next two single spreads link well due to their colour scheme, however, I’m not sure if the text underneath ORDER is as clear as I would have hoped. Similar to before, I kept the opposite page quite simple with two brain scans, one a clear, normal scan and the other of someone with OCD. My thoughts behind this was that someone with OCD would have a very different definition of order and chaos to someone who doesn’t. The next two spreads I feel are the weakest within my zine. I created the text using stamps and highlighted the message within it but I struggled to find something to go alongside it. So I decided to use an image of the same shape and colour to do with nature or the weather. On photoshop, I manipulated an image of a wave which I think also looks like a weather front chart. For my last double spread, I focused on a geometric style with the idea of the chaos theory in architecture and how it’s based on simple geometry. I placed the words onto the edge of the shapes to try and portray the chaotic nature. Lastly, for my back cover I used the chaos theory symbol again, but added a filter to give it a textured appearance to link back to the front cover.
