After carrying out my research and brainstorming I created a number of quick sketches of possible layouts and designs for my zine. I found myself focusing on the idea of the chaos theory and asking questions through my sketches, like is there one without the other. I kept coming back to the imagery of butterflies as they aren’t something I would link with chaos and order, but when you look at them with the chaos theory and butterfly effect in mind, I felt it would be a good way to visually ask subtle questions throughout the zine.
Once I had created these sketches, I created thumbnails of my zine to see how they would work beside each other or if I should give one sketch a double page. I decided to sketch out my thumbnails while keeping within a possible colour palette, but I realised that some of my ideas didn’t suit the colours, so I plan on exploring having a more wide colour scheme, like in my initial sketches. An example is the eye in the storm, I felt it wasn’t as effective when it isn’t blue.
For my colour scheme, I decided to take inspiration by two things that I was highly influenced when coming up with my sketches, lightning and butterflies. I feel the contrast between the two is suiting as it mirrors the contrast of chaos and order. Also, I like the combination of the soft colours of the butterflies with the dark and bright contrast in the lightning.
