Sculpture: Planning & Final Outcome

For this task, we had to create a public artwork for the PlayPark outside of the Ulster University campus. The aim was to promote equality for all and respect for one another. Once we were given this aim, the first thing that came to mind for me was equality and respect among the students who would be on the campus and are coming from all different areas of the country and further abroad. So, I wanted to design a sculpture that reflects students from different backgrounds, cultures, opinions etc. coming together. I thought of things I could base the sculpture off of that everyone has, so DNA came to mind. I felt this was a good concept as even though everyone’s DNA is slightly different, we all still have it, which I feel mirrors the concept I was planning.

In the above plan, I have outlined the main ideas I have for my design. For the helix shape, it would be made from two strands of metal, with the detail of the counties of Ulster carved in both English and Irish, which links back to the university. It would keep the original grey colour with the coloured joins being split in the top and bottom sections and then the centre a singular grey to show the unity.

I created a small maquette of the structure using wire and grey tape to try and replicate the helix shape I imagined in my designs. Then on photoshop I added the coloured strands and placed the image into the area I felt was best for the sculpture to be in the area.
