Graphic Design & Illustration: VINYL RECORD TASK Contextual Research

I carried out some research into some covers from the punk era that used similar style and techniques that I wanted to use in my own design. One band that uses a particular style of text is the American hardcore punk band Fear. It is a very simple but effective cover. I plan to use this type of text as my main form of text as I feel it links to the punk era well and looks like text from DIY covers at that time.

Another cover design I feel is effective is the ‘Punk You’ cover. I feel the torn edges and collage style text is very effective. I think this would also be a good technique to include in my own design. The black and white image is also effective with the small pops of colour so that the important information stands out to the viewer. Similar to other covers from this era, there isn’t an image of the actual artist, but the chosen images are picked specifically so that the viewer still knows who the band is, due to their take on the DIY style.

One band that created a lot of effective and striking record covers is Sex Pistols, an English punk rock band. They incorporate strong, dramatic imagery along with text similar to the examples before. In terms of my own design, the covers by this band are my main inspiration as I want to create a dramatic cover that would shock the viewer, like these ones.
