Graphic Design & Illustration: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE Digital Squares

26 Digital Images

After I had completed my final sketches of my graphic language squares, I was tasked with creating 12 of them digitally. Originally, I had picked my twelve sketches that I wanted to create but once I began making them on Photoshop, I found that they didn’t finish as cleanly as I had hoped. So, I decided to create all of my sketches digitally to see which ones turned out best. I feel my sketches turned out successful on Photoshop and the ones I picked as my final 12 had clean edges and my colour palette is as successful digitally as it was in my sketches. I found the sketches that we completely based on shapes turned out the best compared to the designs where I had to use loose, freehand drawings.

Final 12 Digital Designs:

GIF Task:

Once I had finalised my digital squares, I split them in half and created two gifs. I am pleased with the overall outcome of my interpretations of the 26 words and I feel they work well together. However, I feel the designs that are based off geometric shapes rather than freehand sketches are more effective as they have a cleaner finish.

Illustrative Style:

After completing the task for the digital drawings, I decided to create some of them again but in a more illustrative style. I decided to add some characterisation to the shapes and using brighter colours. I feel these are just as effective as the black/white/orange digital squares in their own way. I found these fun to make as well as trying to come up with ideas of how I could change the shapes.
