Before starting this task, I felt it would be beneficial to carry out research about the game, as it wasn’t on I was very familiar with. Battleship is an immensely popular board game, played all over the world by all age groups. It originates all the way back to 1900 when Clifford Von Wickle started the game. It began on pen and paper but is now better known as the board game since 1967, which is completely based on naval strategy.
I felt the best layout for my design would be the board game as it gives me more options to add or change areas of the game. To begin with I wrote down a range of ideas that I felt could improve the game. I based these off of the good decisions you can make in a game including resource trades, risk versus reward and short term versus long term. I also had to deal with the poor decisions including blind, meaningless and obvious. One I really had to focus on was blind decision as it would be the main poor decision in Battleship.
Following this, I narrowed down what changes I wanted to make. I felt these were the best options to try and introduce more good decisions. I created some quick sketches as well to try and help me visualise how my ideas would work together in the board game format.
Below I have attached a video explaining my ideas along with some digital images of my design.
