As part of my contextual research, I focused in on the stamp series created by Detail. Design Studios, a group of graphic designers based in Dublin. An Post commissioned the studio to design a series of stamps under the theme of Space Exploration as a way of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 1969, along with celebrating astronauts with Irish heritage. A challenge they faced was showing multiple messages in a small space. An area I particularly like in their work is the use of colour. It combines all the stamps together highlighting that it is a collection as it’s not the images natural colouring. The combination of a portrait with an image of a space craft tells the public more of a story and the history of the images compared to just one on its own. The simplistic font is also successful in keeping the publics focus on the images and the way they turned it on its side fits into the small space well. Overall, I feel that the graphic designers were very successful in creating a cohesive series of stamps that tell the history while commemorating the 50th anniversary. By exploring Detail. Design Studios work, I have discovered that working in smaller spaces is more difficult that larger billboard posters as you have to compose the design in such a way that it provides a lot of information without being overwhelming or looking messy and cramped.
