For this brief, we were tasked to create a mini digital photobook under the theme of ‘Beauty in the Ordinary and Overlooked’. This theme really intrigued me as I knew my subject matter could be things that wouldn’t usually be photographed. I found that my main challenge was pairing the photos together and presenting a visual metaphor for each one. I’ve attached my photobook in the link below.
A Quick Explanation of Photo Pairs:
- Leaf & Street: I paired these two together mainly based on their colours and feelings of warmth. But as I thought about it further, I recognised the lines within both images. Following this, I felt that these images paired well as they give a sense of all roads (or lines) lead home i.e. the street leads to a house and the veins link back to the tree.
- Two Trees & Goal Posts: These images are a suitable match due to the structure and shape of the subject matter but also the symmetry within the photographs. I felt they paired well as both subject matter of the trees and goal posts seem to reach into the sky.
- Oven Grill Light & Bread Bin: This would be one of my favourite pairs as I feel both images give off the same feeling and atmosphere of danger due to the strong red. The images are of an oven grill light and the sun reflecting on a metal bread bin.
- Cup of Tea & Paddleboarder: I decided to have these images in black and white to keep with the feeling of stillness and tranquillity. I feel they pair well also due to the positioning of the subject matter whether it be the granite worktop or the water.
- Dog Food & Leaves: I paired these two images together mainly due to their composition and colour. But when I was adding them to my photobook, I realised that both the dog food and fallen autumn leaves would make the same noise if you were to rummage through them which connects them with their sound.
- Eye & Streetlight: While looking at a quick glance the reason I paired these images together might not be clear, I feel the focus of both images being the circular shapes of the eye and light make them a successful match. I feel the lines of the blue eye match the lines of the light breaking through the leaves are a good visual connection.
Tutor Feedback:
Most successful pairing was the first one of the street and leaves due to the orange tones and the lines up the middle. The composition of black and white pair successful and the leaves/dog food pair shows humour and fools the viewer into thinking their the same thing. Least successful pairing would be the trees/goal posts as they are good as individual photos but not as a pair.
