Animation: Final Character Design

This is my final character design, and I am pleased with it as it’s my first time creating a character from scratch and using the methods of animation. I found myself really enjoying this task which surprised me. While I don’t have a specific species/kind of creature Dex is, I feel that I have created him in such a way that it would be up to the viewer to decide what he exactly is. I feel my design captures the personality of my dog, who was my main reference and inspiration, because of the facial expression is silly and the big floppy ears. While the head and body are a strange combination, I feel once animated that they would work well together as it would help show the clumsy personality of Dex as his arms, legs and ears are similarly shaped and would lack control. I’ve decided that Dex will be all grey with a bright orange collar so that the details as they are so limited and are just lines aren’t lost against a background. I feel my design shows how young Dex is because of his silly face and size which I hoped would appeal to my target audience of children. Again, I am really pleased with my final design and I’m excited to see how it turns out if I animated him.

Digital Work:

Once I had finished my sketches of my final character design, I decided to see what it would look like as a digital drawing. I found this more difficult than I originally thought I would as it was my first time using a graphics tablet to create a digital drawing with some detail. The part I found the trickiest was drawing while looking at the screen so I decided to use the layer where I had the contour lines to draw out some quick lines of what I wanted the shapes to look like. Then I use the black brush tool to make the finalised line. I am quite happy with the final outcome but if I was to try again, I would try and make sure that the thickness of all the lines were equal.
