I was really nervous about this research project and had a difficult time finding a piece of art relating to sustainability that I liked. I finally came across this one though it is not done by a professional artist but rather a school. I thought at first that this wouldn’t do at all, that it needed to be a real artist but then I thought about it and it really makes no difference whatsoever. I really like this idea, making a jellyfish out of plastic bags and bottles to show sea pollution and I also like it because you hear all the time about turtles confusing jellyfish and plastic bags and this is a real representation of that. It’s a beautiful piece of art that makes you think while also recycling the materials used in its creation and repurposing them into something both meaningful and beautiful. Sustainability is a maze to navigate and its seemingly impossible to find a product that ticks all the boxes as companies use the word simply for advertisement or furthering sales, it all feels a bit like empty promises but I think there’s a real awareness now and I guess it’s becoming fashionable to look for sustainable options. I think this piece of art is so simple in its execution but so effective. It uses materials that are harmful to the environment to create art raising awareness instead of letting it all go to landfill.
