Research: Gender

Gender is hugely discussed in art as there has been a shift in the approach people have to both gender and sexuality. Many would agree that gender is an idea or construct and not entirely real, meaning that many have begun to experiment with what it could mean and stretching the boundaries of what people should behave like.

Gender in art is starting to get more and more recognition. People are beginning to realise that women have not had a chance to join art movements or access an education in art in the past and today such mistakes are starting to be rectified with old artworks made by women being highly sought after, though they are admittedly rare and hard to come by as their value and worth as actual art pieces is only realised now. Modern artists are free to be who they wish and free to explore themselves within art. Queer artists are becoming more and more popular, especially with the younger generations as more and more diverse perspectives on life, gender and sexuality are discussed in art, offering freedom to those willing to try and understand it.

I would say gender is becoming more and less relevant. What I mean by that is it is becoming less relevant in that it doesn’t matter who you are, you’re artwork can be appreciated and more relevant in the sense that people are willing to experiment with their gender and are open minded to this.
