TADF : Textile Art, Design & Fashion Mixed Media / Manipulated Weaving and Hand Stitching / Sewing

Claire Smyth AAD010 Introducing Studio Practice : Mixed Media Weaving and Hand Stitching / Sewing (Creating various examples of both experimental mixed media hand weaving and hand stitching / sewing in responses to the contained theme and colour palette of the previous TADF mood boards)

During / throughout the ends of the second week of the TADF (textiles) workshops and as a result of our contained mood boards and chosen colour palettes etc, to further finalise the contained two weeks of tasks through looking at, analysing and familiarising ourselves with two of the most practical techniques / elements used / implemented within subject are / industry textiles to bond / attach the likes of specific materials together etc, we were in which instructed and given the brief to create a series of different / varied mixed media hand weaving pieces responding to the selected colours within my mood board considering aspects such as scale, compositions, repeat patterns and different types of weaving (angular shapes / designs), as well as experimenting with aspects of hand stitching embroidery through creating multiple samples mainly focusing upon the sewing technique of the running stitch ,along with other basics well known / utilised stitches such as the likes of blanket stitch, boro / seeding, gathering, rushing, folding, cross stitch and experimenting with patch work etc.

After being explained and fully aware of this contained brief, through collating a range of mixed media materials in correlation to my / the set colours of my mood board and as a result of looking through Pinterest for inspiration and examples of ideas for hand weaving, I then constructed a range / numerous examples of hand weaving techniques through various materials, in which along with the general paper weaving techniques, I had also created an array of other weaving pieces containing different weaves, materials, mediums, scales, angles, compositions and colour contrasts etc that in which included the likes of basket weaving (2×2 basket weaving), quilt weaving, weaving with wool and interlocking materials through weaving them up and over aligned pieces of wool etc, with the contained mixed media materials of coloured paper / card, tracing paper, thread, scrap paper, old black and white primary source images / photographs on photo paper of my mum, the punk / rock band of The Clash and an old water tank that has eroded, as well as carboard, different coloured wool, yarn, string, torn out pages of a telephone book and white graph paper / sketchbooks etc. To correlate with the other contained hand sewing / stitching exercises / pieces of work and to further develop my work through experimenting with different techniques, I decided to incorporate aspects of sewing within a few of my weaving pieces such as the running stitch holing / weaving strips of paper / an image together, as well as using red embroidery thread to create a contained, neat and precise blanket stitch around the surrounding boarder of my mixed media hand weaving examples / imagery.

In regards to the particular handing stitching workshop / task after completing / constructing multiple hand weaving examples, I then began to complete an array of experimental and mixed media hand sewing / stitching samples and compositions on various materials (scrap bits of fabrics that collated from a local upholsterers etc) correlating and in great relevance to the contained colours and themes of my previous textiles mood bard, through collating and executing a range of sewing techniques and stitches, through also considering the contained placement of my stitches, to where in which from considering a great array of types of stiches (planning my samples out etc) and incorporating may types of threads, materials and fabrics I completed various types of hand sewing examples / stiches, such as the likes of running stitch (containing both long and small lines), boro, blanket stitch, cross stitch and folding / gathering  / pleating material etc.

Using an A4 sheet of tracing paper and black thread, I started to create a stitching boarder around the edges of the paper through implementing a blanket stitch to in which by further experimenting with and practicing different stiches, I had then sewn numerous types of running stitches throughout the tracing paper, considering aspects of lines (continuous / sporadic), scale, proximity, angles, overlapping stitches and creating dashes (utilising the sewing technique of boro), as well as using a strips of newspaper to attach and execute the sewing technique of attaching patchwork to a piece of material. Within my other contained hand stitches and examples of sewing techniques, I executed various other stiches such as the cross stitch, as well as folding and gathering cut out bits of martial / fabric, in which especially within both tasks I feel that I have executed it to the best of my abilities, especially as I was able to practice, experience, develop and play around / experiment with a wide range of techniques commonly used within textiles that I have not used / constructed before as seen from my contained images below.

Photography Brief (beauty in the ordinary and overlooked)

Claire Smyth AAD010: Introducing Studio Practice (photography brief) : Beauty in the ordinary overlooked

“There is hidden beauty in the ordinary, and great beauty in the overlooked. Little things are big, less is more. Imperfection is beautiful.” – Quote from: Abby Ross.

In reflection and responding to the Japanese photographer of Rinko Kawauchi and as a result / towards the AAD010 photography with video workshop, using our imagination, we were in which given the brief of ‘Beauty in the ordinary and overlooked` and instructed to take a range of photographs of our surroundings as a result of considering to recognise and take notice of the beauty in the ordinary and overlooked, continuing to look at the world around you with the main purpose of creating and publishing a mini digital photobook using visual metaphors (or similes) to inspire the feeling of a dream. Once all photographs are taken, we are to compose and put together significant pairs of images from our best photographs / pairs that are seen as similar but different through paying attention to various crosses of elements in the pictures that look similar but are not the same thing, including the likes of and for example: two things of the same colour / moods, two things with a vague shape, things that are normally big and small but appear the same size on the flat surface of the photographs, things that are created through the comparison of one thing with another of a totally different kind to create a new meaning (which is often poetic) or /  and considering the narratives that are starting to emerge etc.

For my photos and digital photo-book titled as Deterioration / Unknown Surroundings, I took it upon myself to go around my house (both inside and out) and to significant areas within Belfast and its City Centre that where easily accessible to me. These included the areas / surroundings of Titanic Quarter, Belfast Docks, Ormeau Road, Rosetta and their; significant urban architecture, buildings, gates, building sites, rope, different grounds (cobbled / pavements / tram lines), fences, doors, windows, sky (sunsets) bricks, exhibitions, signs, churches, graffiti (public artwork), nature (leaves, weeds, flowers etc) and aspects of natural deterioration in relation to the likes of developing rust, overgrown weeds, run-down buildings / parts of it, abandoned infrastructure, crumbling bricks and the natural reflection of / in puddles etc through analysing and taking photos utilising key shots, compositions and point of views such as closeups, unusual angles, portraits, landscapes, skylines (taking shots from far away etc) and taking into consideration the likes of light, relictions, shadows, weather and the contained environments with the main aim of looking at ordinary things within my house that reflect the feeling of being in lockdown (trapped within your local area), along with considering things around me that wouldn’t typically be seen as beautiful / interesting to the general public as a result of letting my mind and eyes drift when analysing and taking into consideration what exactly is around me / right under my noise or on my doorstep without realising.

Below, I have now composed, displayed and put together a pdf PowerPoint Presentation / digital photobook containing a wide range of photographs / images which I believe are my best shots, along with significant pairings to in which when going out and about taking my photos, I really considered what type of shots would suit each other and go well together as a result of significant environments, objects, shapes, colours, tones, and textures etc throughout my images.

Graphic Design & Illustration (Graphic Language)

Claire Smyth AAD010 Introducing Studio Practice : Graphic Design and Illustration brief / workshop (Graphic Language)

(Analysing, experimenting and discussing different types of graphic language including examples based upon – point, line, plane, balance and rhythm … through the use of both drawing, mixed media, digital and paper / collage compositions etc).

To / when completing this graphic design and illustration workshop and project we where in which formally instructed to create various graphic language sketches in response to 26 given words / tittles through the use of shapes, lines and a constructed / well balanced and consistent colour palette. From this we where to then make an array of the previous designs both digitally and with paper (collage materials) , with the ability to create a gif and experiment with the 26 tittles, through gaining a better overall enhanced understanding of graphic language and aspects within it including becoming much more familiar with working digitally as it was something that I wasn’t too aware of previously.

Within this graphic design and illustration workshop, the 26 words / tittles where in which : shape, rhythm, pattern, tone, proximity, align, ratio, repetition, contrast, scale, proportion, fold, type, balance, grid, glyph, process, modular, abstraction, tension, layer, texture, hierarchy, unit, space and random.

To begin these tasks / pieces of graphic design and illustration work, I took it upon myself to carry out a series of secondary source research beforehand to further familiarise myself with these various words and aspects of graphic design to where I was then able to make sure that I successfully attempted to meet all the set in place and required criteria when fulfilling the given brief surrounding graphic language and its contained techniques, developments, contrast, compositions, shapes and designs etc.

* Please find attached various screenshots / images via my personal Pinterest board (pins) in regards to inspired graphic language designs / secondary source research of relevant / intriguing graphic language design (geographic shapes / forms etc) both digitally and through paper (mixed media) including links to work created by graphic designers, which as a result created and developed great progress and inspiration / ideas when continuing to peruse this graphic design and illustration workshop/project:

Alternative Means of Drawing (Blind Drawing)

Claire Smyth AAD009 Drawing in Practice Alt. Means – Continuous Line Blind Drawings (wire etc)

When completing this alternative means blind drawing task, blind drawing was something that I had never experienced working / drawing with before, which as a whole it was in fact highly enthusiastic and really brought out your creative side. – Which to complete this task, we were given the overall brief to look and draw yourself in the mirror from the shoulders up without looking at what you are drawing and not lifting the pen from the page with the main aim of sketching / drawing a (10 +) continuous line drawing self portrait using a wide range of both pens / markers etc.

Surprisingly, after all attempts, I overall feel that I was still able to recognise and make out a solid facial structure and features similar to myself within my drawings to where I then went onto copying and going against one using black florist / gardeners wire to create the lines and marks of the specific face / self portrait with a 3 dimensional affect.

Alternative Means of Drawing (Digital Processes Online Workshop) Monogram Task

Claire Smyth AAD009 Drawing in Practice: Alt. Means – Digital Processes Online Workshop (Monogram Task)

Creating, experimenting and designing examples of monograms regarding your own personal initials was in fact another highly creative, thinking and explorative task within / apart of day 1 of the Digital Processes Online Workshop.

To complete this task, in order to be successful, beforehand I took part in various secondary sourced research into looking at ideas / examples on various Pinterest boards in relevance to the structure and general design of the CS initial monograms. Using various markers and pens I started to draw multiple of my design, treating it as a trial and error basis to see what works and what doesn’t.

As a result, I then went onto design and make 2 final monograms (final pieces) using a much wider range of techniques and mixed media as I set out to incorporate aspects of collage work and stencilling (cutting out my initials), along with creating the CS initials out of various materials – including: newspaper, negative photo films and letter stampers, in which I am overly pleased with the outcome.

Photo / Found Type workshop (letter form / typography phrases & drawings)

Claire Smyth AADOO9 Drawing in Practice : Photo / Found Type Workshop (letterform phrases & drawings)

(Various letter-formed word phrases as a result of creating multiple alphabetical typography letters, through specialised out of the ordinary materials and objects such as – tools, metal pieces, stationary, letter stampers, pens, old vintage books, newspaper, bottle tops, lids, wooden lolly pop sticks, keys, matches, clothing pegs and negative photo reels etc).

For this task, we where instructed to create a range or 2 – 3 phrases using and out of the letter that we had previously constructed and collated to create / display the whole alphabet.

As a result, I had chosen the phrase, quote and word: LOCKDOWN NO.2 ? , STAY HOME PROTECT THE NHS SAVE LIVES & GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME.

In relevance to the / this work produced throughout this AADOO9 workshop, my phrases where immensely inspired as a result of the previous shapes that I had created along with the current circumstances (coronavirus / coven-19) that we are still facing today, including the looks of Public Health logos, signage, phrases (plastered all over building and consumers TV’s across Northern Ireland and the surroundings of the United Kingdom) and the overall risk for a potential second lockdown or tightened restrictions as we enter and head into the winter months, along with one of my favourite quotes ”Good Things Take Time” and that working hard and having a strong / passionate willpower can get you to where you need to be in life.

As a result / from creating various phrases, I then went onto creating a silhouette drawing using a range of different mixed media including newspaper and negative photo film (but mainly through the use of ink ballpoint pens / fine liners) of the ‘Good Things Take Time’ quote, in which if feel that the outcome of this overall task in general (including the drawing) was in fact highly successful as throughout I become highly passionate and involved within it as I really took into consideration how I photographed and presented my work for review and putting it onto my blog.

Photo / Found Type workshop (Alphabet)

Claire Smyth AADOO9 Drawing in Practice :  Photo / Found Type workshop.

(Alphabetical ordered letter forms created / positioned through the use of unanimous objects, such as the likes of – machine parts, tools, keys, plastic, hooks, Allen keys, players, stationary, bottle tops, batteries, wire and wooden lolly pop sticks etc).

To complete this task / workshop, we where in which instructed to create, design and put together a composition and layout based upon and using random, incidental and irregular objects and items found around and based in the surroundings of your household to symbolise letters of the alphabet from A to Z.

When undergoing this task / work, I began collecting and collating various objects and items around my house in which the objects I found best to use when attempting to create / symbolise letters of the alphabet where in fact suprisingly tools from my dads toolbox, stationary, wooden lolly pop sticks, metal curtain pole ends, old books, batteries, lids of jars, medicine / pill cases and sewing equipment etc.

Once the objects where collected, I went onto forming various letters and placing them in alphabetical order until I has happy with the finalised image, which overall I really enjoyed this workshop / task due to the ability to use an external range of mixed media and having to go beyond your creative and thinking stills in a structured short period of time.
