Concertina Project

Concertina Project.

Within this project i started out with studies of buildings from Belfast. However, due to COVID I had to move my focus to the environment back home. Although at the time I saw this as a set back I feel that it had aided me in creating a range of different, unique, panels.

This collection of panels is taken from interesting buildings and landmarks around Belfast. At the time of creating this my materials were limited therefore, I don’t feel like these panels were as interesting as they could have been. I also made the mistake of using paper and, as shown in the picture, it became easily bent which made it much harder to stand.  Within this project I tried to use a range of techniques and colors to make the panels diverse and really make them stand out on their own. My favorite panel is the top row, second across, as I feel it has a really urban, almost polluted feel to it- this is something I associate with the city coming from a small village.

For this set of drawings I chose to be much more experimental through using different fabrics and materials to create textures. For the most part I tried to stay away from obvious color palettes such as greens and browns to try and make my concertina more exciting and vibrant. My personal favorite from these panels would definitely be the purple panel on the bottom right as it has several layers to it (as shown below0 it has a card backing with masking tape windows and all of the details have been cut out by hand.

Techniques used (Top Row from left to right): Marker pen on masking tape; drawing ink; acrylic on bubble wrap and layered felt.

Techniques used (Bottom Row from left to right): drawing with ink on a stick on felt; PVA glue on marker pen; watercolor on toilet roll; watercolor and masking tape on different cut outs.
