The Set Up.
Above is my set up i created using materials such as tin foil, fabric scraps, paper, posters, old receipts, cardboard, wool, pins, paperclips, ribbon, tissue paper, card, light bulbs, tape, plastic, nails and a pair of boots.
I tried to use a range of interesting materials so that I had a range of things to work with and zoom in on when it came time for me to create my studies.
Charcoal Drawings.
Above are the charcoal drawings I created through using a view finder with my set up. I tried to focus in on specific areas to see what would work best in my final paintings.
Wet Media Studies.
For this piece I have used watercolor and a viewfinder.
For my next wet media study I used black ink layered on top of watered down ink. I really loved the effect that the black ink gave the piece.
Photography.
Below are examples of some of the photographs I took of my set up to use for my large acrylic studies.
I also created a collage using several of the photographs I had taken to paint for one of my large studies. This is shown below.
A2 Acrylic Studies.
Using my photographs I began my acrylic studies on pieces of A2 card.
Shown above is my base layer with simple lines drawn out over the top to act as a grid for me to build on.
I then moved on to building up some base colors.
At this point I had to leave the studios as we had to close early. I focused more on the left painting before I left to try and get one closed to finished before I left so that I could get feedback from my tutor. I planned to finish both paintings at home which proved quite difficult as I did not have a wall space to place my paintings on the table- where I could only work on one at a time. I was also continuously having power cuts due to the power lines where I live coming down during the bad weather- this made it difficult to light my paintings and take photographs of them. However I am still quite happy with the final outcomes (shown below).
Final Outcomes.
Overall I am pleased with the outcomes of both these pieces. I just wish I could have had the two extra days in the studio to really focus on them as I found it much harder to work at home. I am glad that in some places I changed my color palette to fit the piece better.
The hardest part of this project was trying to take photos of the final outcomes at home. It was extremely difficult to get good lighting so that the colors were shown accurately. Unfortunately I don’t feel that the photos accurately represent the paintings as they look much more vibrant and detailed in real life. However, I am still happy with my painting outcomes as there are many layers that give the piece a unique feel. I am sure I will continue o take thus layering approach in future acrylic projects.
Below I have included some close ups of my work to get a closer look at the layering.
