Ceramic Sculpture.

Below is a drawing taken from the environment classes on AD009 where I was able to sketch from within the studios. I felt it would work best to translate into a ceramic piece.

I have decided to use the bottom right hand corner as my sculpture reference.

Clay.

I started by drawing out a simple shape taken from my drawing.

This is what my drawing looked like before I started sculpting. I wanted to keep it simple to ensure I could complete it. Within the sculpture I plan to make the base of squares larger so that the bottom is bigger ad there is a gap between the top pieces of clay where they should connect.

Final Outcome.

The DAS air dry clay I used was quite hard to work with as it seemed to dry much faster than normal clay. However, I still attempted to create a structure from it. I used techniques such as cross hatching, rolling out the clay and making clay slip to assemble my sculpture.

As you can see some cracks have formed in the clay as I left it to dry for too long before assembling. If i were to work with air dry clay again I feel like i could do a much better job. I really enjoyed working with this new type of clay and I have definitely learnt a lot from doing so. In future I would ensure my clay stayed wet and would have bent it around a tin to prevent the cracks shown above.
