Artist research – Protest/ Dissent

Miles Regis is an artist who focuses closely on politics, in particular; racism. Looking closely at this image, Regis’ use of eyes in this painting allow for the painting to appear as though it is looking at you, making you focus on it more and feel for the victims of racism. It has been highlighted that Regis’ ‘recurring motifs including his use of eyes, encourage the viewer to look deeper.’

The layering of imagery, colours and patterns as well as various characters on a white background allow the image to be eye catching and makes the message obvious. The colour scheme of the words “WE ARE THE DREAM” also highlight the words against the white background and gives a more emotive feel as the viewer is forced to take in the message that the artist is trying to portray. The negative space in this artwork has just as much effectiveness as the actual paint, it doesn’t only show the importance of the message through the bold colour and block capital letters, but also shows its importance by having the complete blank negative space and uses the positive space to include the figures as he could have put them around the writing. However he chooses to keep everything in the centre and remove any distractions which could affect the message. The artist overall shows that black people are equal and shouldn’t be victim to any sort of discrimination based on the colour of their skin.

Artist research- Protest/ Dissent

Jeff Hong is an animation artist who was born in Los Angeles although he is based in Ned York. He is an animator who uses artwork as a way to show people how their living habits are affecting the world they live in and he hopes to change the way some people live so that they can “be more responsible and care to the earth.”

Jeff Hong has a love for Disney, like many other people do. By using his love for Disney and combining it with his mission to tackle the changing earth, he produces powerful images that speak to the audience.

By using some of the worlds favourite Disney characters, it shows the emotive piece on how the earth is changing. For example, this piece where we see the character of Ariel from The Little Mermaid crawling from the water. This highlights the fact that our seas are changing and if we don’t start caring for our environment, it will drive all the creatures from our seas, killing them and destroying our eco system as we need our animals to survive. I think it is extremely successful as the use of well loved characters speaks to viewers much more. As well as having the name of the collection “unhappily ever after”. Implying that these characters will not be able to survive past their happy ending as we are destroying the world. I think this artwork is very powerful and emotive.

Not only does he focus on climate change and our damaged world, but he also focuses on topics such as hunting our wild animals, in this piece of art work he uses Simba from ‘The Lion King’ as his main focus. Simba remains the focal point of this image giving the artwork an emotive feel and shines light on the brutal killing of the wildlife rather than focusing on the actual killers, showing the brutality of the subject matter and reminding people to do their part to help.

Describing an object from it’s perspective

I am something to be looked at, admired or remembered. A moment in time is captured within me. It brings joy to many, or sometimes even sadness. You can take me where you please, in a wallet or on your phone. Or leave me wherever you want, in a frame or an album. I am always in the past, something used to reminisce. I can be of absolutely anything; a place, animal or a friend. It keeps the good times still, and kept in your possession for you to look back at the past and enjoy it without question.
