Artist research – Protest/ Dissent

Miles Regis is an artist who focuses closely on politics, in particular; racism. Looking closely at this image, Regis’ use of eyes in this painting allow for the painting to appear as though it is looking at you, making you focus on it more and feel for the victims of racism. It has been highlighted that Regis’ ‘recurring motifs including his use of eyes, encourage the viewer to look deeper.’

The layering of imagery, colours and patterns as well as various characters on a white background allow the image to be eye catching and makes the message obvious. The colour scheme of the words “WE ARE THE DREAM” also highlight the words against the white background and gives a more emotive feel as the viewer is forced to take in the message that the artist is trying to portray. The negative space in this artwork has just as much effectiveness as the actual paint, it doesn’t only show the importance of the message through the bold colour and block capital letters, but also shows its importance by having the complete blank negative space and uses the positive space to include the figures as he could have put them around the writing. However he chooses to keep everything in the centre and remove any distractions which could affect the message. The artist overall shows that black people are equal and shouldn’t be victim to any sort of discrimination based on the colour of their skin.
