Concertina
I found this quite difficult as where I live is all full of the same shapes and colours. I think if I were to do this again I would go to Belfast and focus on the larger scale buildings.
For the first panel, I used alcohol based colouring pens. I like the vibrant colour of the bricks in this and really enjoy working fast paced a quite messy, which the pens made it easy to do as they blended well and allowed me to complete this quite fast.
The next panel also worked really well. Even though I don’t particularly enjoy working with charcoal, I always get a good final result which I think was reflected in this piece. It also contrasts well with the colourful pieces it is beside.
The next panel was made using water colour and water colour pencils. I am not as proud as this one as the water colour pencils came out quite dull, as well as the landscape I was doing meant that most of the colours were browns. I think watercolour would work well with a different landscape, meaning i would probably worked better in a cityscape location.
The last panel would most likely be my favourite as I really enjoy working with pen and it is a really strong medium for me. I really liked the outcome of it despite there being a lot of white space however I do think it’s quite strong and a style I enjoy drawing in.
Overall I believe I would have worked better in a cityscape although it was a satisfactory outcome for this project.
Monogram
Portraiture
For this task we received an image of our partner from our group which we had to draw. For this task I chose to go digitally however using a tool that give the affect of a dry brush. Overall I am extremely happy with how this turned out as it was my first time doing a digital portrait in this style.
Mark making
House building
In this task we were asked to make three houses; a small one made of paper, a larger one using cardboard and one using recycled/found objects.
this cardboard house did prove a little challenging as the tape wasn’t holding it together for long periods of time until I had to go back and by taping everything to a board helped it stay together better.
Using found sticks and string, I created a house/ shelter which is a little different. Rather than sticking with traditional ways of looking at shelter I decided to look at environmental means of shelter; a birds nest. I did find this challenging to keep together as I was using objects that were solely found rather than bought. Meaning the string did prove quite difficult as trying. To thread it through the sticks caused others to fall which caused more to fall as they were all relying on each other.
I did attempt a house like structure alThough as I has no access to a hot glue gun which would have kept it together, it became very difficult to create some sort of roof and resulted in me just coving the top in extra sticks.
Blind contour drawings
These were all completed in the studio. For this we had to look at our partner and draw them without looking at our page. I used continuous line as I found it easier to stick to where the features should be.
I really liked how these turned out however in an attempt to make them messier, i put my sketch book on my head and completed more of them shown below.
I then chose two of my drawings and traced the using wire, I really like how these turned out.
Environment
For this I created a series of drawings of townscapes and areas around my house. I found this very challenging to do at home as all the houses where I live have the exact same shape and I also only have windows on 2 sides on my house, meaning no matter what room I went in, I had the same view and a slightly different angle which did not alter the view in a noticeable way.
Both of these drawings are A3 and in my opinion are very strong. In the first one, I used gel pain and water, chalk pastel and water and some charcoal and water. I feel like it worked well as I used wet on dry meaning the marks made by the pen and chalk pastel can still be seen, giving it a nice messy affect.
The second drawing was done with black pen and filled in with water colour. I like how this turned out as Nike-t some white spaces and it shows the quick nature of the drawing, making this one of my favourites.
As I was looking into a street with the same houses, I had to alter how I was looking at things so for this A2 piece I decided to go up stairs and look slightly up, getting the tops of a house and a trees. For this I used chalk pastel and oil pastel. I am not a big fan of oil pastel however I feel like the end result was strong.
For these I had to get creative and look at things around my garden and the negative spaces. For the first drawing I looked at the gap between my house and my gate and the second I just focused on my fence. For both I completely soaked the page (A2) and went over it with chalk pastel and water colour to get the final outcome.
Using water and chalk pastel I feel like this could have been stronger if I was more confident in letting the water manipulate my chalk pastel.
This A2 piece is my favourite. I focused on the edge of my house and completely soaked my page. I then put water colour all over using different colours and let the water manipulate how it fell and blended together. Once dry I used a black fine liner and put in details such as the bricks. As my grey water colour wasn’t strong enough to cover my page I had to use watered down acrylic paint however I really liked the outcome of this.
This drawing was to bring our attention to shades and the lights and darks of the space around us using the flat edge of our charcoal. The only problem I had with this was that my charcoal was running out and I could not completely the drawing to the extent I wanted to.
Phototype
For this we were asked to find objects around our home that resemble letters and make an alphabet. This proved slightly challenging for letters such as R or letters where I had to form the letter like X or M.
After gathering all out objects, we were asked to make words and phrases with them and either draw what we formed or draw around them.
Using my objects I spelt ‘happy’ and had drawn smiley faces around it to tie it together.
Shown above is the phrase “a piece of cake”. I first put my phrase together using my objects and then drew it with pen. I like how this turned out as the pen gives it a very quick and messy feel which I like.
Although this is a good drawing of my phrase “break a leg”, I think the pencil makes it look very empty and doesn’t give it the same affect that the pen did.
Lastly I done the phrase “chasing rainbows” and done a rainbow below on the board it was photographed on. I overall liked this and thought this project turned out successful.
Museum work
For this task we were asked to go to the Ulster Museum and draw an area of space rather than one object. This meant we had to focus on everything that was in the space we were drawing, rather than making an object the main focal point of the artwork. All were made using charcoal.
This would be my favourite piece. It is A2 and it is when I fully recognised what we had to do, picking up the details of the cabinets, the floor and objects in the background. Filling the page fully and focusing on space rather than an object. Overall this was my favourite.
The three above were all made on A3. These were created to understand the basic shapes in the space in front of us, drawing what we seen without going into too much detail. The first one of the dinosaur was my favourite out of the smaller ones. It showed the things in the space provided without going into too much detail while still looking completed. The second one did not really follow what we were supposed to do as I got carried with the nature of the fossil having so many textures and i started shading, not finishing the final drawing as I still had the background to do. The last one is my least favourite as I think the space I chose to draw did not work for the nature of the drawing. I chose to do a blank wall that had holes in in that displayed sea creatures.
These last two are both A2. The first one I like as I feel like it has a messy and free sense. Rather than blending out all the charcoal, I left some of the lines in to show the direction of the cabinet glass which give an overall nice effect. The last drawing is my least favourite out of the A2 drawings. I chose to do objects that are sat in front of a blank wall and a large picture. I filled in the basic shapes however I feel like the area I had chose to draw did not compliment the type of drawing I was doing.
