Fine Art

For fine art we were tasked with creating a set up to work from. As I was absent from class I made do with a set up at home. I made sure to include some different textures and patterns such as the folds in the blanket and floral design on the elephant. I also wanted to see how the set up would change with the addition of a mirror and glass.

I started with my charcoal drawings, focussing in on seperate aspects of the full set up. I contrasted between smudging the charcoal and leaving some of areas untouched, layering up the medium to create areas of darkness. I especially enjoyed drawing the bear, as the marks from the wood carving creates a good contast.

I then moved to indian ink. In these pieces I started with the blackground, layering up details and darkness as I went. I tried to experiment with different techniques; in the first ink study I let the ink bleed out creating a blotched effect whereas in the second I dabbed the ink with a tissue which resulted in a more speckled texture. I’ve also varied my viewpoint, looking from above the elephant ornament.

I started my acylic paintings with an undercoat, one green to match the background, and one orange as I wanted to see how this would affect the finished piece. I tried to keep my style fairly loose and quick whilst still picking out details when needed. I like the outcomes brought by the undercoats; the green shows well in the metal and glass aspects to create reflections and the orange brought a much warmer tone to the elephant. I didn’t want to overwork the paintings so made sure to step back occasionally, and I found I really had fun with these pieces.
