Graphic design album research
For my research into album covers I decided to look through my Mum’s collection of 7 inch vinyls to see if I could find any with a DIY style.
Folk punk band The Pogues have a image of a greyhound race, pixelated on the front and even more so on the back, almost unrecognisable from the original image. A simple cover featuring no additional artwork, the band have only included their name and the song.

The Smiths often put images of old films on their album covers. When they couldn’t afford the rights to an image they simply recreated it, a low cost solution. Here Morrissey holding a glass of milk stands in for Terence Stamp holding a chloroform pad in The Collector.
The Stone Roses DIYed much of their covers with John Squire, the guitarist, providing Jackson Pollock inspired paintings. These artworks are accompanied by bold text create an eyecatching design.
The Pixies have a simple DIY cover featuring the destinctive profile of a bull terrier. The same dog (credited as Spike) appears sitting on the back cover. A photograph on the disc of a pearl necklace contrasts this tough looking dog.
