For this week I finalized some of the designs for sci fi world project. Alongside learning how to block out the world in unreal engine using primitive shapes like squares, spheres and pyramids.

Blocking out

To do that, I had to first open Unreal and bring in a 3D model of a human which our teacher supplied us with to be able to get an accurate scale representation of the buildings around the town by drawing its file at the bottom of the screen. This will be the model I will be using for scaling. The reason why this is essential is because you do not want to break the immersion when doing a tour of the scene as you want to be captivated by the world and feel like you can live in it.

To switch to navigate, rotate and scale you can press enter or use the shortcuts W,E,R to be able to do so. This will allow me to move, rotate and resize objects to fit the scene.

To grab the primitive shapes, use the left panel and hold right on them and drag the shape that you wish to use. The navigate, rotate and scale work the exact same as the ones you can find on programs like Blender and Maya. After a few minutes the background was done. Here is the result.

So far, this is how the city might look. However, there will be some changes to it that will be made as I feel like the city isn’t dense enough by adding more buildings in the background. However the layout of the main attraction looks great.

Concept Art

For the concept art for some of the objects, I decided to finalize the Street Lamp, one of the buildings and the flying train.

The first one was the Street Lamp. For this I decided to keep experimenting with the sharp design that I had set up because it looked very interesting.I also decided to add some colour to the lamps to get an idea of how they may end up looking.

  1. For this one, I kept the original design while making some modifications like making the inbetween hollow to add some dimension to the prop.
  2. For the design of this, I wanted to give it similar features to this one but, give it a more angular look to add a different feeling to the object.
  3. Last one I wanted to make the blades smaller but to make the energy ball bigger. Again, to give it a different feel to the scene.

In the end, the choice was to use the middle lamp street as it not only looks a lot more interesting than the others, but it can also be repurposed into something entirely new like a small billboard.

For the flying train, I decided to keep the first design and do little touches of improvement to it like making it have a rounder shape and adding the weird back for the head. However, I ended up scraping the concept for the second design as it looked more organic, looks like a train, and it looks a lot more ridged and believable. Later one, I decided to flesh it out a little more by adding smaller details like how the little legs would work, and extra details like a car grill, doors and light for it to make it a believable vehicle and made a tiny ref sheet while at it.

Lastly, I did a rendered version of the curved tower with a few noticeable changes. For one the the curve that was covering the whole tower from the front, has now turned into a platform for the building, and I added a bigger hologram ring to bring out more of the shape of the building.

Overall

I am pleased with some of the results that I have for the concept art. One thing I didn’t like about this week is that I wasn’t feeling mentally well and couldn’t do more drawings.
