For this part of the task, I will be recording my contributions alongside my group’s progress for the Pre-Production phase. This will include concept art and how we came up with the name and idea for our project. For this assignment to create an animation with a duration of 30 seconds long with the theme adventure.
Beginning
Firstly we had to come up with the idea. So, I created a Miro digital Moodboard, this allowed us to come up with quick and easy ideas that could start our project. There were a lot of great ideas that we came, some that were interesting and some that were extremely silly ideas. However, the one that stood out of the. The idea of a cute creature or character going to a dark and scary graveyard. We ended up going for this concept because we thought it would perfectly fit within the time limit.
My Progress
Once we came up with the idea, I started drawing concept art of the main character of the short animation. For the first part I thought that I would make our main character a hedgehog because I thought it would fit with the theme. When creating the design I made sure to use character body shapes to portray the innocence of the character. As I did more designs, I began getting tired of the hedgehog, So I tried going into other directions like making a simple blob creature, a frog and a pumpkin. For references I looked and a lot of hedgehogs and a few props to get an idea of the character.
For the second page, I wanted to experiment more with the pumpkin alongside mixing and matching my and Nathan’s wisp design. I did a few other designs before settling on the pumpkin design.
This is the final design that I managed to create. I decided to mix the idea of the wisp and the pumpkin character together to create the design you see in front of you. The idea is that the wisp is controlling the body of the pumpkin character kind of like a pilot piloting a plane. At the end of the day though we ended up using the design that Nathan has created of the Wisp.
My Classmates progress
Nathan work:
During this time, Nathan came up with a different character design for the main character which was the wisp design. The reason for this choice was that he wanted to do a simple and expressive design for our little character.
Alex work:
Alex also worked on the character design for the wisp by trying to come up with concepts of the wisp.
Timmy work:
Timmy has helped us gather a lot of moodboards to inspire use for the project. This includes the atmosphere of the world, the world design and a few character ideas.
