Week 1
On week 1 I had to breakdown three character designs of my choice by using simple shapes like spheres, cubes and triangles (first image). The first character that I did was Samurai Jack (top center). I wanted to go for something simple when doing the drawing to get a better understanding of how to break down characters using simple shapes. Out of all the characters he was the most fun to draw out of all the three characters. The second character that I did was Ryuko Matoi (center left). This time i tried breaking down a character with a little bit a realistic proportion to give myself a bit of a challenge. The last character that I used was Geralt of Rivia (center right). For this one I really wanted to challenge myself with more realistic proportions. Overall I really enjoyed this week a lot as it got me to understand how to use the shapes to construct the form of the character.
Week 2
On week 2 I had to make thumbnail sketches based on the Constellation World that I was creating for the group project. Alongside this, we had to choose three backgrounds for one point and two point perspective. I also began creating ideas for one of the characters of this universe named Orion the Hunter alongside his lion companion. This was another good week as I got to think of the world and how it should look and how it should feel.
Week 3
On the third week, had to create another set of detailed environment thumbnail sets using gray scale and selecting one of the backgrounds and create a super detailed one. I also kept working more on the Constellation theme by working more on the idea of how Orion’s lion will look alongside trying to make some transformation designs for the lion into a shield. I also worked on the antagonist of the universe as well. I really enjoyed this week as I got to work more on backgrounds and character designs. One thing that I am not proud of is the design of the antagonist and I felt there could have been more to do.
Week 4
For the fourth week, I had to understand colour, by making a coloured background which expressed the tone of the atmosphere (top). We were also tasked to do the same with the background that we drew (center left). During this week I was moved into a different group which worked on the Bio World. So, my first idea when seeing the concept of the world was to create creatures for this world as I felt that the world didn’t have a lot of believable creatures and terrifying. For the first creature that I made was a flesh creature which I then wrote more ideas of how the monster’s anatomy and how it worked alongside choosing a more refined idea of the design. I also worked on some ideas for a harmless creature but however, I didn’t like the ideas that I came up with.
Week 5
For this week people got switched again into different groups. So, I go put into the Cyberpunk World. For the homework of the week, I had to create a character and flesh out the design of it. So my idea for a character was to make a hacker that is also a DJ, wearing a bunny helmet. The reason for adding this character is because I felt like it wouldn’t feel as cyberpunk if you didn’t have a hacker in it. Here is the process that I had to go through when making the design.
Week 6
For this week we were shuffled one last time into a different group which I got put back into the bio world. So I started working on an idea for the second dangerous monster of the world. The idea that I came up with was a mixture between a mermaid and a flytrap. As you can see the idea of this flytrap is that the creature appears to be beautiful and using its beauty to lure it before transforming into something disgusting and killing the pray.
Week 7
For week 7 we had to animate 3 balls with different properties to get an idea of timing in animation. For this I used real life references to get the timing of the animation. Also during this week we got to choose the group that we want to be in for the final task of the semester. I chose the Bio World because of how much fun it was and that I felt like there were a lot of ideas I can create in it.
Week 8
For week 8 we were tasked to make an animation of a moving flour sack using the pose to pose technique to test out different animation techniques. Also I made some progress on finalizing the creature designs by creating their colour schemes along side the canon height or properties of the creatures.
Week 9
In week 9, I was tasked with creating an animatic for the looped animation. Firstly I began with the storyboard laying out how the scene will work. For it I decided to animate a chat character created by one of the people in the group. I also began creating a sketch of the background alongside some of the props in the animation. I then took all of those elements and put them in after effects to make a short video showing how the animation will look like.
Week 10
On week 12, I began working on the background for the animation by adding shading and any extra details to it. I also started working on the animation by making a rough animation and getting an idea of how the time is going to be in the animation. I also added the punching bag as a part of the animation so it would be easier to get the timing of when the bag is being hit.
Week 11
For week 11 I took the feedback that was given to me about the animation and made some adjustments to it and used the animatic poses of the character due to it having a better structure and making the character feel solid. During this time I also began working on animating the sack and colouring in the animation. Then I grabbed the animation alongside the props and worked on the animation using after effects which resulted in the video you can see at the top.
Week 12
For the last week I added any final touches to the animation to make sure it looks good before submitting. For it I decided to add an foreground to the animation so it can give depth to the animation alongside a gradient to add more depth. Once that was done, I edit the animation and add the sound effects. Alongside that I merged the animation of everyone.
