For my design deck, I am going to focus it on myself in terms of job application, rather than basing it solely on the major project. I have seen a lot of jobs available remotely, so feel like having a design deck that explains me as a person and what I can contribute would be more beneficial than just focusing on one project.

Notes from lecture;

  1. A design deck can be a catalog, brochure, or PowerPoint
  2. Design decks consist of relevant work for an employer or an artbook style for the project
  3. Try not to use more than 2-3 projects
  4. Focus on visuals, less text
  5. Legibility is a priority

Examples from previous years

The Big Splash

  • very bright and vibrant, context is easy to see and the background is illustrative but not distracting
  • has included contact details
  • screenshots are very clear, I really like brushes inclusion on page 7
  • does a technical breakdown of her rigging
  • film links and portfolio at the end

Call of the Water Horse

  • Nice illustrative first page but background for other pages seem really bland
  • Environment pictures hould be larger, no more than 4 per page, same with animation pages
  • Unused material seems like a pointless filler?
  • End page is nice but white titles against water are hard to read

Catalyst

  • Really like the title font, cyperpunk vibes, digital
  • Background is detailed but not distracting
  • Font is too difficult to read for me
  • Different characters each having their own page with different screenshots is nice
  • Would have preferred larger screenshots for environemnts
  • The pages at the end don’t work for me, I would have preferred a seperate design deck for personal rather than together

Awaiting Odysseus

  • Artbook is really nice but not convinced its necessary with such large screenshots in the press kit
  • Feel like the text looks messy as the alignment seems off
  • Specifications are good but maybe in the wrong place
  • Last screenshot should fil lthe page, looks like its missing something

My Draft

In my design deck draft I experimented with a vertical and horizontal layout in A4 size. The vertical layout works better for writing text and looks like a traditional booklet, but as most of my environments and videos are in a horizontal frame it is more difficult to display images. I like the horizontal layout better as I think the images are better with a full page screen. I need to experiment more with the images to see should I keep a full page layout or try to squeeze in multiple images. In terms of the text I like the text size and the font is CF Wild West Font, found on FontSpace. This font works great as a title and highlights my main project as the biggest piece of work I’ve done. For my final draft I may need additional space for pictures of my main project.
