The purpose of a business card is to give someone contact details very quickly to remember you by, so it is typically seen in a business or more professional circumstances rather than inputting it into a phone or writing it down.
Notes from lecture
- Business cards should be informative but not cluttered. Should include name, contact details, and portfolio link
- Design – consider hierarchy, use a grid, typeface, and legibility is very important, consider color and shape, front and back bust be complementary
- If including a logo, use to brand yourself but keep it simple. Rely on typefaces seen in a similar context, use simple shapes.
For my business cards, I am going to create them in a similar theme to my posters, so they will be based on my major project. If we are in the university for the End of Year show my major project will be the focus of my display, so making the poster and business cards western-themed would be the most memorable option.
Examples from previous years
- Illustration is well drawn but would not suit my work
- few colors used but still impactful
- QR code is a great idea for an instant link
- Screenshot works well and shows his skill and interests
- Greyscale is impactful
- Simple design, quality over quantity vibe
- Colour theme not for me but works for the card
- Like the combination of initials at the start
- Really nice card and very vibrant
- Flowers on the back seem faded, personally would have faded the DB to match
- Illustration matches her job very week
- Background is not just a solid purple so it doesn’t look flat
Peer Feedback on my Business cards
Rachel Martin –
(About Business Card Front 2) I think this will look really good if you make your monogram. As opposed to having the full name, the AO will look good
Emma Shanks-
Aodhan’s Feedback on my Cards
For the business cards bare in mind that they’re going to be double-sided so have a think about what you’re going to put on the side with your contact info. I think blending more of the modern elements into your business card will make it stand out more. Maybe a render of clubs sign could work? Or the neon martini glass against wood? Your own name in neon against a wood background? Obviously, you want to be careful it doesn’t end up looking too much like the business card for a bar.
Review
I completely agree with the feedback raised and it has allowed me to see more drafts and potentially different ways to take the design. I really liked the idea of the sheriff’s badge but felt the ones I had made were overdesigned, where Rachels’s suggestion of using my initials is a good idea and then I can put my full name and details on the back. I am also going to produce some renders of my scenes and try them with the background.
