Evaluation
Overall, I was pleased with how the models turned out but felt they had a lot more potential. My original idea was to create more of a scene in Unreal Engine, but with having to learn to use Zbrush and the brushes in Substance Painter for the first time, this was unfeasible. The project then became more based on me learning to use Zbrush for the first time and experimenting with textures, so I produced some models based on my original idea. Again this project has a lot of potential but I left the other assignment to take up too much time with having to take on last-minute work for it, so I couldn’t push this as much as I needed to.
At first, I found Zbrush quite overwhelming, mainly for the import/export process and how to fix the meshes while in the program. I liked using the brushes to add details to the models. However I was not use to the baking process for textures and was disappointed with how detailed some models looked after sculpting in Zbrush, then would lose detail when baking in substance. This is something I believe could have been fixed if I had more time for the models but unfortunately had to move on with the assignment. Zbrush is definitely something I want to look at further in the future especially in terms of making gaming assets/environments, I just feel like my lack of knowledge and experimentation with it is visible in this project, however, it’s a good start.
Previous texturing I had done was just be simply applying preset textures in substance painter and changing the colour. However by pushing myself to use the brushes I was able to create models that had more specific detailing to what they were. It also added narrative to the model, such as ageing. This is something I look forward to doing more of in the future and seen why it was crucial to spend time on your textures rather than just applying them.
