3D Artist – Silent Games

Silent games is a game development studio based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They mostly focus on co-op multiplayer games with an RPG element, and was founded by two former Ubisoft developers.

Reasons why I didn’t pick this job for my mock interview;

  • Studio seems to be newly founded and still finding its feet, focusing on a gaming genre that I am not overly familiar with or want to focus on
  • Job description states that and Experienced knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 is needed, whereas I have only begun using the software and will not be able to confidently talk about it.

Environment Artist – Sledgehammer Games

  • Focus on multiplayer games such as Call of duty and although I have played and enjoyed these games, I’d prefer to go into something more related to open world action-adventure
  • Requires 2+ years industry experience of making 3D assets

In the animation/gaming industry a lot of positions are entry level, or sometimes called ‘Junior positions’. These jobs typically require little to no work experience and are targeted towards graduates in the field they are hiring, on the understanding that most applicants will be freshly graduated students from universities. The emphasis on these jobs is that they will provide more on site training and have reduced production targets for the junior.

Currently, I have little outside experience of modelling or the industry other than what I have learnt at university. therefore I researched more into entry level ‘junior’ positions in companies, as I believe they will provide me better opportunity to grow my knowledge while gaining real industry experience.

Research Intern – Graphics (2D & 3D)

Adobe is looking a research intern to help develop new Adobe art products. The researcher will analyse, model, render both 2D and 3D models and implement adobes new forms of 3D drawing such as capture, lighting and editing of vector graphics, using algorithms.

Reasons why I didn’t pick this job for my mock interview;

  • Job states it is recommended for PHD or Masters students so although it is an intern job it is still too advanced for my current level.
  • Seems more ‘how to 3D’ rather than actually producing 3D models
  • Closer to programming than the creative sector I want to go in

Intern Quest Designer – CD PROJKET RED

CD PROJEKT RED is a polish game developer and publisher based in Warsaw, Poland. They were formed in 1994 and mainly specialize in RPG based games, there most famous games being The Witcher series, and their up and coming game Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in production for November 2020 release, and has already won the Gold Joystick award of 2019 for most anticipated game of 2020.

They are currently looking for an intern game designer for Cyberpunk 2077.  Reading the job description, the designer will have to be highly creative in terms of detailed narrative, asset design, and able to create a ‘seamless’ quest, so high knowledge of user experience necessary. The personality description of the job seems to look for someone who is able to problem solve quickly and adapt their ideas to different cultures and environments, whilst also having knowledge of modding pre-existing games and using game editors. This job can lead to a more senior role which involves heavier use of more scripting tools and game design elements, which I interrupt the senior roles as being more ‘behind the scenes’ based.

Reasons why I didn’t pick this job for my mock interview;

  • The job description states that knowledge of a game engine, especially RPG Maker, is desired. I have only begun to use Unreal Engine and don’t feel like I have the qualifications for the Job
  • From the job description, this job includes going from creating a concept to the final production of the project. I would prefer to do something more focused like 3D modelling and focus on working from a given brief.
  • Fixing reported bugs – bugs reports are closer to the programming aspect than the design area that I’d prefer to go into

Junior 3D Artist – Ubisoft

Ubisoft Singapore is a studio belonging to Ubisoft, and has been credited with most of the development of the Assassin Creed series. It is currently developing Skull & Bones.

They are currently looking a Junior 3D artist. From the job description this will mean the creation of 3D assets and ensuring they meant the quality and technical requirements of the brief. They require proficiency in 3D modelling software, which I can use Autodesk Maya for, and also state they need someone to handle texturing work.

Ubisoft state on the job description they require someone with a good art sense and a good packaged portfolio. This will mean having examples of my 3D modelling work and being confident in talking through any problems and solutions that I had while creating my models, as well as why they were creating in the first place.

I have decided that I will base my CV, Cover Letter and mock interview on this job description.  I have been a fan of the company for a long time and have multiple games of the Assassins Creed series. Ubisoft specialise in open world action-adventure gaming, which I am very passionate about. Assassins Creed origins had beautiful environment and models and I think it would be create to work for a company that produced projects like that. The job is also entry level and will allow me to develop my skill set.
