Week 3 – Character Creation – Character Blockout / Design

07/10/2024

This week 3, we focused on character blockout/design. Looking upon anatomy, zbrush such as Rynameshes, sculptors, and zsphere, including blender’s sculpting tool. Learning blockout rules, for example, stage 1 and stage 2.

Stage 1: You had to start your block out with low poly meshes. They must be in simple forms and have primitive geometry. Using rough shapes to build the body. Using symmetry. Blocking main parts of the body shape.

Stage 2: You would make sure to shape the body correctly while examining your character from all sides. Start to add asymmetrical detail towards the end. Remembering to use references at all times.

For this week’s homework, however, we are to use a horse blockout or any other blockout such as cow or dog. I chose the horse as I thought it would be more convenient.

Base 1: This is the first base where I had blocked out the horse using basic shapes, using this image for reference.

Base 2: The second base I sculpted the block out using the smoothing tool and drawing tool.

Base 3: For the final base, I added detail to the horse’s face by adding ears, nose, and mouth. I made sure to include muscle detail to the horse’s body. Using practical reference.

For my second task, I had to sculpt a block out / sculp a skull. Using either Blender or Zbrush. I decided to use Blender as I was more used to using the software.

Here are the results.

Stage 2

Stage 3

This was quite difficult, as I found it hard to create the nose and mouth of the skull as the creases looked unclear. Even though it was difficult to create the detail of the skull, I still found it easy and fun when creating the proportions of the skull’s face.
