Week 2 – Character Creation – Concept Designs

30/09/2024

This week, in class, we were introduced to Monster Theory as we looked upon different types of mythical creatures and folklore examples, including a monster’s concept design and narrative structure. A monster is an unnatural form of being to the human eye. Making monsters look unsettling with their weirdly proportioned bodies and faces. These fictional characters/monsters have their way to spread fear to the viewers simply by their use of appearance.

‘Monsters appear in accordance with the state of the observer; they (the monsters) mirror the merciless ragging beasts that boil alongside love within a human heart, seeking to release greed and dominance, mayhem and murder.’ (The Eldritch World, Nigel Pennick, Arcana Europea)

After covering Monster Theory, we started practicing using Zbrush as well as having a go at reading some folklore stories such as the Banshee, Puca, Yeti, Basilisk, and the Changeling. This is really handy, as it guides you on how to make your own story / narrative. Improving your storytelling techniques as well as your literacy skills.

For our homework, we had to draw 3 character designs for next week’s semester.

When creating these characters, I ensured the body proportions of my character were well balanced and accurate. I made sure my character designs matched my character’s storyline while using different inspired images for reference.
