Animated Narratives – 2000 Reflective Blog ( Pre-production // Part 1 )

My Reflection

Pre-Production

In the first Week of week  1, Team 12 started working on the story’s structure by finding  ideas on various concept designs/layout designs from various artists, for example, Super Mario Bros from well known Nintendo Entertainment. The Super Mario Bros mapping design engaged us. Their Side-scrolling, three-dimensional platform was our aim at the time as we were mainly looking for a style of animation called ‘parallax scrolling’.

“Parallax scrolling is a technique in computer graphics where background images move past the camera more slowly than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene of distance. The technique grew out of the multi plane camera technique used in traditional animation since the 1930s.” (Wikipedia, ca.09/07)

By the use of teamwork, we’ve made 2 narrative ideas for our animation but the one that stood out the most was the Seal’s Journey.

These Narrative Ideas were made with the help of team member Rae Houston herself.

Seal’s Journey – Notes

Beginning

-The Scene showcases seals relaxing on the ice

-A baby seal pops out from behind its parent and chooses to bounce over the edge of the ice to stare at a fish

-the ice below the seal suddenly separates, and the baby seal drifts across the water turning behind to see the island growing distant

Middle

After being separated from his parents the seal accidentally slips into the water

– He’s in the water, dazed as he rubs his eyes

– The seal opens his eyes to find himself looking at three beluga dolphins

– These beluga dolphins were not harmless but useful as they kindly helped the baby seal’s journey back home

– through the waters of the Arctic Ocean he is suddenly faced with great terror as he gets chased by a killer whale but then the Seal is saved. The Dolphin saves the baby seal by pushing the Seal back to the surface.

Ending

– The seal misses his new friend but sadly has to leave to reunite with his family, saying goodbye to the dolphins that saved him

-The Seal hears a call as it turns to see its parents,  bouncing back to them happily

After this, we made a plan to create mood boards and colour schemes which best describe the Arctic. This is used for the aesthetics of each character that we make. We mostly searched for Cool tones as they represent cold and moody environments e.g. blues and whites.

We also made Storyboards for our chosen story i.e. Seal’s Journey.

For week 2 we made progress on our storyboards.

“A storyboard is a planning document. It is created before the final product is developed and used to illustrate a story or show the changes of scene.”

(ocr.org.uk, ca.2016) Drawing the shots as well as describing the action, shot types, angles and the scene before animating. Storyboards are useful as they guide the user on what they would like to do for their animation. This was very difficult due to the lack of time and commitment but I was able to sketch out all the shots that I wanted to do…
